From 1990 to 1992 he was anauxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.Bishop Ryan was ordained to the
priesthood for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles onMay 3 ,1957 . He was named president-rector of the Archdiocesan Saint John's College Seminary in 1986, and was consecrated a bishop by CardinalRoger Mahony onMay 31 ,1990 , for thetitular see ofRemesiana . He was appointed to be the third Bishop of Monterey in California byPope John Paul II in 1992.
