Up Against My Heart was the fifth and final album that country music artist Patty Loveless would record for MCA Records.

This album had a bit of a troubled history, being recorded in Nashville, Tennessee during January and February of 1991, with a planned June release in time for her summer concert schedule. However, the release was delayed until September which meant that it was in the stores only for the past two months of her tour. The album produced the singles "Jealous Bone", "Hurt Me Bad (In a Real Good Way)" and "Can't Stop Myself from Loving You", all of which Loveless performed in concert duirng her summer tour that year.

Largely because of the late release date and lack of a full concert tour to promote it, the album only reached #27 on the Billboard Top Country Album Chart. It was critically well-received, however went relativley unnoticed outside of her existing fan base.

"Can't Stop Myself From Loving You" was Loveless' last single release on MCA Records.

In the spring of 1992, the relationship between her and MCA/Nashville was not a happy one. Loveless believed her "Up Against My Heart" album wasn't receiving the same amount of promotion as albums from other female country artists on the label, especially when other MCA artists who were able to climb up the charts such as: Trisha Yearwood with "The Woman Before Me", George Strait with "Gone as a Girl Can Get" and Reba McEntire with "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia", an excellent cover of Vicki Lawrence's song. All of these songs were being heavily promoted by MCA and the results were good radio airplay and chart movement. Meanwhile, Loveless' release languished, only reaching #30 during the week of 20 June 1992, despite being on the charts for 18 weeks.

In July 1992 Loveless left MCA and signed with Epic Records.
