Gondia, or Gondiya ( _mr. गोंदिया), is a town in the state of Maharashtra in western India, and is the administrative headquarters of Gondia District. Gondia is very close to Madhya Pradesh as well as Chattisgarh states, and is considered the gateway to Maharashtra from central and eastern India. It has more than 100 ricemills and some small scale tobacco industries. This makes it a very important central hub for businessFact|date=February 2007.

Geography

Gondia district lies at lattitudes 20.39 and 21.38 North and longitudes 89.27 to 82.42 east. The adjoining districts to Gondia are on northern side Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh and on eastern side Rajnandgaon district of Chattisgarh state. To the south there are Chandrapur and Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra and to West Bhandara district of Maharashtra.

Industry and education

Gondia is famous for its resident Engineering College "Manohar Bhai Patel Institute of Engineering and Technology".

Gondia Industrial Area is Industrial Area in Nagpur Region. With the main objective to demote industrial growth, [MIDC] has'nt fully developed the Gondia Industrial Area and all efforts are being made to make this Indl.Area. Various corporations have started setting up base, ever since plot allotment started. Today, the number of industries operating in the area is only 6, with around under construction. Plots in the Industrial Area Of the 110.87 hectares of land developed 161 plots have been carved out. 97 plots have been allotted to Gondia industrial areas and entrepreneurs, 64 industrial plots are available for allotment. Gondia Industrial Area spans a total area of 146.14 hectares. Praful Patel, the civil aviation minister hails from this place.

Transport

The district headquarter is situated at Gondia situated on the broad gauge Mumbai - Calcutta railway route which is 1060 km from Mumbai, capital of state. There is a broad gauge line heading south to Nagbhir and a Metre gauge line subject to conversion under Project Unigauge to Nainpur and Jabalpur. Gondia is 150 km from Nagpur and 1000km from Pune. Gondia is about 990 km from Mumbai, the state capital of Maharashtra. Gondia is also known as Rice city, as it is a rice producing district and has about 250 rice mills near the vicinity of city. Gondia has bus connectivity to Jabalpur, Nagpur and Raipur.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Gondiya had a population of 120,878. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Gondiya has an average literacy rate of 89%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 81%. In Gondiya, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
