homepage = [http://www.tutv.puertorico.pr/ www.tutv.puertorico.pr]WIPR-TV is an educational, full-power television station located in San Juan, Puerto Rico transmitting over analog channel 6, digital 55. The station is owned and operated by Corporación de Puerto Rico para la Difusión Pública "(English: Puerto Rico Corporation for Public Broadcasting)" and is a member of
PBS .History
WIPR-TV was created as a result of lobbying for public broadcasting in Puerto Rico, beginning in the 1950s. The station went on the air for the first time in 1958 becoming the first educational television station in Latin America.
The station has one full-power satellite: WIPM-TV, channel 3 in Mayagüez. WIPM-TV, though mostly a repeater, does produce some local programming. Its studios and offices are located in South Post Street in Mayagüez. WIPM-TV's digital signal is not yet on the air.
Because of its audience, much of WIPR's programming is in Spanish, with local programming or Spanish dubs or subtitles of English PBS programming. The station is branded as "TUTV - Tu Universo Televisión". During the 1990s, the station was branded as "Teve 6 / Teve 3".
It was also unique among other government-controlled broadcasters in the
Caribbean as it did not show commercials. All other government-controlled broadcasters (with the exception ofCuba and theUS Virgin Islands ) showed commercials. The station was and still remains as one of the few TV stations in Puerto Rico with English-language programming.
In
1996 , WIPR-TV was the first Puerto Rican television station that would broadcast their programs via theinternet .Administration
