They were designed by James Holden. They replaced earlierGER Class G15 0-4-0 of similar appearance.No Great Eastern C53's survived, but there are plans to build a replica of a GER C53 Locomotive which will represent the Toby character (see below) for preservation along with a replica of a G15 which preceded the C53.
