The station began in 1949 as KIBE, operating daytime only with 250 watts as it simulcast the classical music programming of KDFC-FM. It was owned and operated by Millard Kibbe. 1984-03-01 . On1997-08-29 , the station changed its call sign to KBPA, then on1999-02-15 to KBZS, then on2001-07-24 to KSFB, and on2004-07-01 to KNTS. On2008-07-01 it changed again to the current KDOW. In November 2005, the
FCC approved a construction permit for KNTS to boost its power to 50,000 watts day and night. The FCC also agreed to let KNTS build new transmitter towers, near the end of West Winton Avenue in Hayward (close to theSan Mateo Bridge ). Construction of the new towers is still pending. Plans call for four 200-foot towers on the site of a former dump.
