The nearby village ofHalebank is to the north-east.John Middleton (1578-1623), the "Childe of Hale", was reputed to be nine foot three inches tall (2.8 m). His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside of the church is a carving of the Childe Of Hale which is said to be life size.
