One of the possible locations for the site of the
Battle of the Standard in 1138 is land just southwest of the village. The village was an important centre forlinen making andweaving in the 19th century with eight mills in the village at it's peak in 1820cite web|title=Brompton Parish Information|url=http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Brompton/Brompton90.html|accessdate=July 12| accessyear=2008] but declined by the early 20th century. The village is now largely residential with just a few small businesses.St Thomas' Church in Brompton has the largest collection of Hogback sculptures in the
United Kingdom . This collection of hogbacks andViking period crosses that suggest Brompton was the base for a company of stone carvers during that period. It is thought that the Hogback was invented in the Allertonshire area since the Hogbacks at Brompton and Northallerton are amongst the oldest examples. The clock in the tower runs 10 minutes fast.The village of Brompton has an online war memorial, it is claimed that this is the world's first interactive war memorial.
