Baldwin Boys High School

The colors of the school are red and blue; its flag is a red stripe over a blue one, thus reflecting its origins as a school preparing students for the British Indian ArmyFact|date=April 2008.

"Integretas et Veritas" - "Righteousness and Truth" are the watchwords of the institution. The school motto is "Reverentia Jehovae est Caput Sapientiae" - "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" "( [http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+9:10&version=9 Prov. 9:10] )".

The school has several heritage buildings on its campus. The 'Pfeiffer Memorial Playground' is used for football, hockey and cricket tournaments. The Weston Swimming Pool is attached to it. In addition, the school has a small field for basketball and roller-skating.

The school has an enrollment of about 4,000 students.

It offers classes up to the 10th standard (grade) under the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education syllabus.

History

The school was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1880, with a monetary grant from John Baldwin, Ohio, USA. It was known as the Episcopal Methodist School and was managed by a board of governors.

Houses

The boys of the school are divided into six houses. Each house has it own color which matches the first letter of the house. The houses are:
* Richards - Red
* Oldham - Orange
* Buttrick - Blue
* Toussaint - Turquoise
* Pfeiffer - Purple
* Weston - White

Of these houses, Richards, Oldham and Weston were named after former principals; Messrs. Oldham and Richards being the second and the third principals, respectively. Weston, principal during the inter-war years was instrumental in pulling the school out of dire financial straits and saving it from dissolution. His memory was preserved in Weston House, the last house to be created, and in Weston Day, an annual holiday devoted to competitions in swimming and athletic pursuits. Pfeiffer House was named after an American contributor who helped turn around the schools fortune during Mr. Weston's tenure.

The school was one of the first to provide swimming facilities in Bangalore in 1940. There is an annual Intra school Swimming Competition on Weston Day.

It is strong in soccer and hosts the most prestigious inter-school soccer tournament of the year for the exclusive schools of old Bangalore, "The Baldwin Shield".

The school has an alumni association, the "Old Baldwinian Association"(OBA). Baldwins' celebrates Andersen Day to foster camaraderie amongst all its students.

Chess

Baldwin Boys' High School organizes an Inter School Chess Competition, "CHEX”. Abid Majid participated in an International Chess Competition held in Abu Dhabi and was judged the best junior player. Later, he went to Moscow to participate in a competition sponsored by the Russian Embassy and beat a Russian Grandmaster. Each year the school hosts nearly 150 to 200 young chess players from schools around Bangalore. Indian Grandmaster Raja Ravishekar has been the judge for a number of years.
