Aberdeen, Eastern Cape

Aberdeen, Eastern Cape

Aberdeen is a small town in the Cacadu District Municipality of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. set in the Camdeboo Mountains. With its numerous examples of Victorian architecture, it is one of the architectural conservation areas of the Karoo.

The sights within the town that also warrant attention are the Dutch Reformed Church with its noticeably high tower. Behind the church, in the church hall, the ladies of the congregation crafted a most beautiful set of tapestries depicting scenes from the Bible. A visit to an old town such as Aberdeen is not complete without a visit to the cemetry. It is there that the history of the town unfolds if enough time is spent wandering amongst the graves - a chat to the caretaker will be quite enlightening. The architecture of the Magistrates Court is worth spending time with, especially the gargoyles on the roof. They are quite fearsome - are they intended to persuade obedience of the law?
