José Augusto da Costa Séneca Torres (pron. IPA2|ʒu'zɛ 'toʁɨʃ) (born
Torres Novas ,8 September 1938 ) is a former Portuguese footballer and coach.He played for
SL Benfica from 1959/60 to 1970/71, and for Vitória Setúbal in the 1971/72 season. He finished his career as player-manager ofG.D. Estoril-Praia , aged 42. He was one the great names of Benfica and thePortuguese national football team of the 1960s, along withEusébio 's,Mário Coluna 's, andAntónio Simões 's. He missed the Benfica team that won theEuropean Champions Cup twice (in 1961 and 1962), but played in the finals of 1963, 1965, and 1968.He had 33 caps for the National Team, 31 of them as a Benfica player, scoring 14 goals. His debut was on
23 January 1963 , in a 0-1 loss against Bulgaria, for theEuro 1964 qualifyings. His last game, played at the age of 35, was a 2-2 draw, again against Bulgaria, on13 October 1973 , for the1974 FIFA World Cup qualification . In 1964, he was lucky to avoid a lifetime ban from football after attempting to punch a referee during the1964 Taça das Nações in Brazil.The peak of his career was as one of the leading figures of the national team at the
1966 World Cup in England, where he scored 3 goals. He scored the 2-1 winning goal over the USSR in the match for the 3rd place.As a coach, his best result was the qualification for the
1986 World Cup , where Portugal was eliminated after the 1st round.
