Sher was born in
San Francisco, California where he attendedSt. Ignatius College Preparatory and later theCollege of the Holy Cross inWorcester, Massachusetts .Career
Sher recently directed the world premiere of "
The Singing Forest " and "Prayer for my Enemy" by "Craig Lucas " atIntiman Playhouse ; "The Light in the Piazza " by Lucas andAdam Guettel at Chicago'sGoodman Theatre , for which he has received a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination; and "Mourning Becomes Electra " forSeattle Opera andNew York City Opera . He has received national and international recognition for his work as a classical director, and was honored with the 2002 Joe A. Callaway Award from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation for his production of "Cymbeline " inNew York . That play marked his Intiman directing debut and, produced by Theatre for a New Audience, went on to become the first American Shakespeare production to be seen at theRoyal Shakespeare Company . Intiman's artistic director since 2000, his productions here include "Nickel and Dimed ", a world premiere byJoan Holden based on the book byBarbara Ehrenreich ;Tony Kushner 's "Homebody/Kabul "; Bergman's "Nora"; Shaw's "Arms and the Man "; Shakespeare's "Cymbeline " and "Titus Andronicus "; "The Dying Gaul " byCraig Lucas ; and Goldoni's "The Servant of Two Masters ". In New York, he has directed theTFANA productions of "Waste" (American premiere, 2000 OBIE for Best Play), Cymbeline, "Don Juan " and "Pericles" atBrooklyn Academy of Music . Sher previously served as associate artistic director atHartford Stage and company director atThe Guthrie Theater . He has directed, taught and led workshops across the country and internationally. In 2005 he was nominated for the Best DirectorTony Award for his work on the Broadway production of "The Light in the Piazza ". In 2006 Sher directedGioachino Rossini 's "Il barbiere di Siviglia" ("The Barber of Seville ") at New York'sMetropolitan Opera in Lincoln Center.Personal life
