Electoral district of Enfield

Electoral district of Enfield

Enfield is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia. Named after the suburb of the same name, it is a 20km² urban electorate in Adelaide's north, taking in the suburbs of Angle Park, Broadview, Clearview, Clifton Park, Enfield, Ferryden Park, Kilburn, Mansfield Park, Regency Park, Sefton Park, Woodville Gardens, as well as parts of Blair Athol, Collinswood, Kilkenny and Nailsworth.

Enfield was created in the 1998 electoral distribution as a safe seat for the Australian Labor Party, replacing the abolished Ross Smith. It was first contested at the 2002 state election, where it was won by ALP candidate John Rau, who had defeated Ralph Clarke, the former member for Ross Smith, in a party preselection ballot. Clarke subsequently contested the election as an independent, finishing second and coming within 800 votes of victory after the distribution of Liberal preferences, which was an unusually close call in a seat where Labor would ordinarily not expect to be challenged. At the 2006 state election, Clarke decided to contest a Legislative Council seat, where he was given virtually no chance of victory. As a result, Rau extended his margin, easily retaining the seat for Labor.
