"In My Pocket" (2001) is the first song released by Mandy Moore from her third album "Mandy Moore" and her fifth consecutive single overall.

The sound

"In My Pocket" was a mix of techno/R&B beats with a Middle Eastern sound; the song was slightly more mature than other Mandy Moore songs and was an entirely different approach for her as an artist at the time. Though the song did not become a huge hit, it did give Mandy Moore a bit more of a unique sound and image, helping her to break through the stereotypical pop princess such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson, all of whom she had spent much of her career previous to this song being compared to.

The video

The video was directed by Matthew Rolston and was shot in a night club that was given a Middle Eastern look to match the similar feel of the song itself, including bellydancers and fire blowers. Mandy sat on a throne and watched almost as if she were royalty. In other scenes, Mandy is seen dancing and almost flirting with one of the dancers. The video is a bit different from Mandy's previous videos, because she is looking sexier and more confident which was another way to helping her to break through the stereotypical Pop princess look-a-like.

Chart success

The song was poised to be a huge hit for Moore in the United States and was expected to finally propel her to #1 status. However, it only reached number eight on the ARC charts in May and completely missed the Billboard Hot 100 but still charted in the "Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles" chart at number two. This was due to its limited airplay on the radio; it performed only modestly on CHR radio (the format in which Moore received most of her airplay), peaking at number twenty in Radio & Records. However, the song performed fairly well outside of the United States, in countries like Australia where it reached number eleven on the charts.

"Pennies in My Pocket"

A modified version of the song, titled "Pennies In My Pocket", was featured in the 2006 film "Miami Vice". The track has little in the way of lyrics; only the chorus is vocalised in the foreground by Emilio Estefan with a mixture of English and Spanish. A guitar was used to replace the verse lyrics. This track is featured on the movie's CD soundtrack.
