English/Latin Rivalry

English/Latin Rivalry

Since 1887, the oldest school in the United States, the Boston Latin School, has faced off against the English High School of Boston, in an annual football rivalry which now takes place on Thanksgiving day at Harvard Stadium. The rivalry is the oldest continuous high school football rivalry in the U.S, and fourth longest all time behind Phillips Academy versus Phillips Exeter Academy, Wellesley, Massachusetts versus Needham, Massachusetts and New London, Connecticut versus Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, Connecticut.

Until the 1950s, the rivalry was fairly even. Since that time, Latin has dominated the series, leading all time 70-36-13, and winning the last eight, 23 of 24 and 37 of 39 contests as of 2005.

Latin's dominance could be considered at its zenith in the 1970s when they held English to only 28 points for the entire decade.

Ten of the games ended in scoreless ties, a rare feat in modern Football at any level, although the last instance of this came in 1945.

Lopsidedness

Much of the series has been decided in blowout victories by one side or the other, with 60 of the 118 games being decided by shutouts and 32 of the contests ending in 20 point or more victories.

2005 Game

The Wolfpack of Latin (4-7), defeated the Bulldogs of English (3-8), 36 to 12. The game was close at the half with Latin holding a slim 14-6 lead, but Latin put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a seven play, 48 yard drive culminated with a three yard scamper by junior fullback Garo Yessayan and a 26 yard rush to the end zone by senior running back Duc Dang.
