Queensland Institute of Medical Research
- Queensland Institute of Medical Research
The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere, and is recognised worldwide for the quality of its research. QIMR was established in 1945 by the State Government in Queensland.
The original purpose was to further the study of tropical diseases in North Queensland.
The Director since 2000 has been Professor Michael Good.
Research
Over the last 60 years, QIMR has broadened its scope to include the immunological, biological and molecular basis of a wide range of infectious diseases, cancers and other disorders. Other important research areas are in epidemiology, the study of the environmental, and lifestyle & genetic factors that contribute to disease incidence among populations.
QIMR has:
* an active program for patenting and commercialisation of technologies developed within the Institute, including those developed in conjunction with academic or commercial collaborators.
* facilities for the GMP manufacture of cell-based and molecular therapies, and
* a commercial Phase I/II clinical trials facility
The Institute has over 700 scientists, students and support staff in four research divisions - which include 38 separate laboratories - an Indigenous Health Program, and a corporate division. Because of its proximity to major teaching hospitals and the University of Queensland Medical School, the Institute is ideally placed for clinical research collaborations and as a centre for research seminars and symposia.
