Bhopawar Agency

Bhopawar Agency

Bhopawar was an agency of the Central India Agency in British India. Bhopawar Agency was created in 1882 from a number of princely states in the western Nimar and Malwa regions of central India, including Bakhatgarh, Barwani, Dhar, Ali Rajpur, Jhabua, Jobat, Mathwar, Kathiwara, Ratanmal, and a number of districts and estates. When created it had a total area of 7684 square miles, and its population on that area was 547,546 in 1901 In 1901 and 1904 certain districts were transferred from this agency to the Indore Residency, created in 1899, and the area of Bhopawar was thus reduced by 3283 square miles. The chief towns were Dhar, Barwani (6277) and Kukshi. In 1925 Malwa Agency was merged into Bhopawar Agency, and in 1927 the agency was re-named the Malwa and Southern States Agency, which was re-named again the Malwa Agency in 1934.

After Indian Independence in 1947, the rulers of the princely states of Bhopawar acceded to the Government of India, and the region became part of the new state of Madhya Bharat. Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956.
