Epenisa Cakobau

Ratu Epenisa Seru Cakobau (IPA|ða ko mbau) is a Fijian chief. Cakobau is a senior member of the "Tui Kaba" clan and a high chief on the island of Bau. The son of the late Ratu Sir George Cakobau (1912-1989), the former Vunivalu of Bau (Paramount Chief of Kubuna (1957-1989) and Governor-General of Fiji (1983-1983), he is also a great-great grandson of Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the warlord who established the first unified Fijian Kingdom in 1871 and ceded it to the United Kingdom in 1874.

Cakobau has been involved in politics; he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1999 as a candidate of the Fijian Political Party (SVT), representing the open constituency of Tailevu South Lomaiviti, and when the Conservative Alliance, a nationalistic political party was founded in 2001, Cakobau was chosen as its first president.

Cakobau is known as a devout Christian and has spoken forcefully about what he sees as the for the people to turn back to God. Speaking at the 150-year celebration of the building of the Nauluvatu church in the Nakelo district on 16 November 2005, [http://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?id=32081 he blamed the failure of the people to serve the Lord "vigilantly" for many of the problems being faced today] . He referred to the conversion to Christianity of his great great-grandfather, which he said was the best thing ever to have happened to Fiji, and that Fijians needed to return to those roots. "Blessings could only be received if we are on the right track with the church, vanua and the Government because if the people serve these institutions well, they should expect the blessings of their work," he said.
