The Sydney Technical College was a name used by Australia's oldest technical education institution.
It began as the
Sydney Mechanics Institute in 1843. In 1878, this became the Sydney Technical College.In 1911, the
high school operations of the college becameSydney Technical High School .In 1949, the New South Wales University of Technology was founded on its main site, as a separate institution. As the
University of New South Wales , this is now one of the most prestigious universities in Australia.In 1969, part of the college became the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT). This institute was reconstituted as the
University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), in 1988.The college continued to operate, eventually becoming part of the
TAFE system (TAFE is an Australian acronym standing for "Technical and Further Education"; TAFE colleges constitute the public further education system in Australia, accepting students generally from age 18). It became known asUltimo College , due to its location. This then became part of theSydney Institute of Technology , which was later renamed Sydney Institute.This college is the largest TAFE campus in
New South Wales .
