Early life and education
Dr. Goldstein was born in Swampscott, Massachusetts where, as Goldstein himself put it, "the conversation was always about the weather." He earned a degree in meteorology from Penn State in 1967, followed by a doctorate from NYU.
Career
In 1972 Goldstein took up a teaching job at Western Connecticut State University He established the only meteorology bachelor's degree in the state, and began to run WestConn's weather center, which supplied forecasting information to 20 local radio and television stations. Through this exposure, Goldstein joined WTNH as a full-time weatherman in 1986. He became somewhat of a local celebrity in Connecticut from these broadcasts, eventually becoming WTNH's chief meteorologist. In 1999 Goldstein authored the Complete Idiot's Guide to Weather. While he has retired from teaching, he holds the honorary title of Director Emeritus at the Western Connecticut State University Weather Center.
Personal life
In 1996 Goldstein was diagnosed with a multiple myeloma cancer in his back that doctors predicted would kill him within three years. Hoping to beat the diagnosis, Goldstein underwent a series of treatments at Yale-New Haven Hospital and he has far outlived the given three years. He returned to work at WTNH, though on a limited air schedule.
Retirement
On 23 August 2011, WTNH announced Dr. Mel's retirement after 25 years of service.[1] Dr. Mel is leaving to focus on his health.[1] In celebration of his many years of service to the people of Connecticut, News 8 will produce a prime-time tribute to Dr. Mel.[1] Dr. Mel plans to make one last appearance on News 8 to say, "Good-bye," to the viewers who have come to trust, admire and love him over the years.[1]
