nihongo|Master Roshi|武天老師亀仙人|Muten Rōshi Kame Sennin is a fictional character and supercentenarian in the "Dragon Ball" metaseries by Akira Toriyama. His appearance is that of an old human's, though he is stronger than most beings on Earth.

The "Turtle Immortal" (or "Turtle Hermit") is an ancient and wise martial arts master and the first Earthling to wield the "Kamehameha". Though he seems frail, he is a mighty warrior, having trained Grandpa Gohan, Ox King, Son Goku, and others. His home, Kame House, a shack on a small isolated island, serves as a gathering place for the Z Fighters and friends. He is a stock character, as he is both the archetypal wise old man and dirty old man, the latter being typical of Shōnen manga. Sometimes he gets cranky, which further provides comic relief. He is bald, with a thick van dyke beard and wears sunglasses. Roshi wears beach clothes or martial arts suits and, during the earlier stages of the series, a turtle shell on his back. He usually wields a walking stick. His companions are usually Turtle, Oolong and Launch.

Roshi was originally voiced by Kouhei Miyauchi. Miyauchi's final acting session before he died was for episode 260 of "Dragon Ball Z", which he recorded only 3 months before his death. The episode aired on March 15, 1995. In his final line, he yells out "Kuririn!", and is turned into a bar of chocolate by Majin Buu shortly afterwards. Since episode 288 of "Dragon Ball Z", Roshi is voiced by Hiroshi Masuoka, who voices him throughout "Dragon Ball GT", and in the recent video games, such as "". In the 10th Anniversary Special he is voiced by Kinya Aikawa, and Masaharu Satō voiced him in Movie 13.

Name and origins

In the Japanese version, the character is commonly referred to as "Muten Roshi." The Japanese word "roshi" () translates to the Chinese word for "teacher" ("lǎoshī"), so his real name may simply be "Muten" and the "Roshi" may be just a suffix. It is possible that his name is an intended play on words for Muten Roti, which is a type of bread in the Indian subcontinent. In English, his name means "Invincible Old Master". Roshi also goes by other titles. Most frequently, he is also known as Kame Sennin (, "Kame Sennin", in English, the "Turtle Hermit"). Korin tells Goku son that Roshi was the first person to climb Korin Tower over 300 years ago, providing an idea as to how old the Turtle Hermit really is. When wishing to act anonymously, Roshi has adopted the name Jackie Chun (a parody of martial arts humor master Jackie Chan). One of his attacks for the time he went by that name was called Drunken Fist, a likely reference to one of Jackie Chan's Movies, but it was renamed Mad Cow Attack in the English Dub due to censorship reasons. Roshi's first appearance is in chapter/issue #1 of the "Dragon Ball" manga, although his first prominent role was in chapter/issue #3.

Relevance and occupation

Roshi lives on an island with a house built on it, known as Kame House; here, he trains his students. Roshi is known as the "Turtle Hermit" due to the heavy turtle shell that he and his students wear on their backs for weight training. At the beginning of "Dragon Ball", he is the strongest fighter on Earth, however his power level pales in comparison to any of the Z Fighters later in the series.

Graduates of Roshi's training (i.e. Goku, Krillin, Yamcha) often wear the kanji for "Turtle" ("Kame") on their "dogi".

Personality

Roshi is notorious for his perverted actions throughout the series and is constantly watching young women on television exercise shows in his spare time or looking at pornographic magazines. He even bribes the young teen Bulma, to show him her panties (although that particular day she wasn't wearing them because a young Goku pulled them off while she was sleeping) in exchange for a Dragon Ball earlier in the series. Roshi frequently flirts with or harasses women; often Bulma and Launch. He is usually comically beaten for these acts. And since Krillin married Android #18 and moving into the Kame House, Roshi has made hobbies of flirting with #18, but suffering the consequences.

Still, he is depicted to be a very wise and gentle person, who loves life and its simple pleasures, but is willing to die if necessary, such as when performing the "Mafuba" technique ("Evil Containment Wave" in the English dub) against Piccolo Daimao.

Alternative timeline

Roshi is one of the few characters to survive in the "Trunks Timeline", as seen in the "The History of Trunks" special. He is hidden in a submarine with Turtle, Oolong and Puar, although he is ready and willing to go out and challenge the Androids.
