October 9 ,1978 ) is a Scottish athlete who competes in the400 metres . She attendedHolyrood R.C. Secondary School in Glasgow before graduating fromLoughborough University in 2000 with a degree in Sports Science. She won the Scottish 200 metre champion in 2002, and 2005. She also won the 400 metres in 2001. In 2002 she also won the AAAs 400 metre championships, she also won an Individual Bronze medal at the 2002 European championships, then added a Commonwealth Silver in the 400 in that same season.In 2003 she came 2nd in the European cup 400 metres and 2nd in the 4x400 relay. In addition to winning medals in individual contests, she has been a fairly successful relay runner. Her personal best time over 400m is 50.82 seconds.
McConnell was originally a high jumper, before turning to her current event and then
400m hurdles . After the 2007 season, McConnell decided to give up hurdling, as her transition from the flat had not been as successful as she had intended, and she has therefore returned her focus to the 400m flat.McConnell has been known for participating in the relay team for Great Britain at major events. In 2001 she ran the 1st leg of the relay team. Helen Frost,
Tasha Danvers-Smith andCatherine Murphy made up the rest of the team, which finished 5th. At the2003 World Championships in Athletics , McConnell ran the first leg of the Women's 4x400m relay. The team, comprising ofJennifer Meadows , Catherine Murphy and Tasha Danvers-Smith finished 6th. Two years later at the2005 World Championships in Athletics she ran the first leg of the relay, and won the bronze medal along withDonna Fraser ,Nicola Sanders andChristine Ohuruogu . In 2007, she won another bronze medal in the same event, along with Ohuruogu,Marilyn Okoro and Sanders, this time running the third leg.Major achievements
