Chikkamagaluru ( Kannada: ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಗಳೂರು ) (also known as Chickamagalur) is a town located in Chikkamagaluru district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Located in the foothills of Mullayanagiri range the town is known for its coffee and tea estates.

Origin of name

Chikkamagaluru literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in the native Kannada language. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakarayapatna and hence the name. About 5 km from Chikkamagaluru there is a town called Hiremagaluru which means "The town of the elder daughter", too.

Geography

It has an average elevation of 1037 metres (3402 ft). The hillstations around Chikkamagaluru are famous summer retreats since they remain cool even during summers. The temperature of the city however varies from 11-20 °C during winter to 25-32 °C during summer.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Chikmagalur had a population of 101,022. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Chikmagalur has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 80% and female literacy of 73%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
