Gautam (given name)

Gautam (given name)

Gautam is a common first name in India. While seen all over India, it tends to be primarily seen in North India. The name stems from two place; Siddhartha Gautama, known as Gautam Bhuddha or simply the Bhuddha (the enlightened one), who founded Buddhism. It also stems from one of the ancient Hindu Sages. It has also been spelled Gotham and Gotam, and in a historical context is most commonly spelled Gautama in the West, reflecting the western tradition to add the letter "a" to Indian names (i.e., Siddhartha Gautama, Bhudda, Ashoka, Chandragupta Maurya, Yoga when in India they were originally Siddharth Gautam, Bhudd, Ashok, Chandragupt Maurya, and Yog). The pronounciation makes the t more like the th sound in English- thus a more accurate pronunciation is Gow-thum, or Gaw-thum(similar to pronunciation as Gotham city in Batman comics and movies)
