"Rederiet" ("High Seas" or "The Shipping Company") was a long-running (318 episodes) Swedish soap opera that aired on Sveriges Television between 1992 and 2002.

The cast featured many popular and renowned Swedish actors, and the show has often been referred to as Sweden's version of "Dynasty". The 45-minute episodes ran weekly on Thursday nights on the public service channel 1 and normally had between one and two million viewers. For 10 years "Rederiet" was the number-one rated show on Swedish television, along with the TV4 rival show "Tre kronor". The rivalry for the viewers can be compared to that between "Dynasty" and "Dallas".

"Rederiet" also gained popularity in Finland on YLE TV2, and the show was also a hit in Norway on NRK. The first season of the show was also sold to Egypt. The later seasons of the series were produced in collaboration with YLE, which most notably led to Finnish actor Åke Lindman appearing in the series.

Plot

The story is about a shipping company which conducts cruiseferry traffic on the Baltic Sea between Stockholm in Sweden and Turku in Finland. It takes place on board MS "Freja", the exterior of which was portrayed in the series by the Finnish registered MS "Birka Princess". In the series the ship has different funnel colours from the ones in real life; in reality they were blue, yellow and red but in the series they were retouched to appear as different shades of blue. The show follows life on board the ship, mostly focusing on the crew and captain, but also on some of the passengers. The plot often involves love, breakups, accidents, deaths, murders, smuggling, theft, arson, rape, drugs, and insanity.

Another part of the story takes place on land, following the life of the Dahléns, the capitalist family who owns and runs the shipping company. There are also rival capitalists who try to gain control over the company, which leads to a constant struggle for power.

Cast

* Gösta Pruzelius - Reidar Dahlén (1992-2000) The patriarch of Dahlén family, and the owner of family Shipping Company Dahlén Shipping. In the first season, he was married to Ellinor which he had the three children Rolf, Renate and Rebecca with. His wife Ellinor committed suicide by throwing herself from Freja at sea, caused by that she learned of Reidars illegitimate son Tony. Reidar remarried Ellinors twin sister Beatrice, which he had a son with from an affair with her in the 50´s. Reidar finally died in a heart attack, after being shot by Emelie Lindberg.

* Gaby Stenberg - Ellinor Dahlén/Beatrice Rosengren Ericson Dahlén (1992, 1994-2002)Stenberg portrayed first Reidars wife Ellinor, in season one, but was written out in the middle of first season. Ellinor committed suicide after learns that her husband had been unfaithful and had a son in his affair. Beatrice, played by Stenberg again, arrived in the 1994 season. Beatrice married Reidar, and survived him with two years. She then moved to Spain and opened a art gallery.

* Mikael Samuelson - Reidar Rolf Dahlén (1992-1994) Rolf was the eldest son of Reidar and Ellinor, and the most intriguing. Rolf was captain on Freja in the first season, and had on board a romantically love affair with the sexy Sofie Sjögren. Even of his affair with her, he was married to Yvette which he had two children with. Rolf wanted to divorce Yvonne, and marry Sofie. Sofie went pregnant, but suffered a misscarriage. Rolf divorced Yvonne, and being the new President of Dahlén Shipping Line. He then had a love affair with Helena Axelsson, but reconciled with Yvette and finally died in an on-screen car crash the episode "Oro och uppbrott" that aired in Spring 1994.

* Suzanne Reuter - Renate Ellinor Dahlén (1992-1994)The eldest daughter of Reidar and Ellinor, Renate is production manager at Dahlén Shipping Line and wants to be President after her father. When Reidar choses Rolf to new president, she gets angry and wants to leave the country with her lover Henrik Bjurhed. She is catched in the fire at the new boat, and lying in coma in season two but wakes up in the first episode of season three. Renate being President of Dahlén Shipping, and is going to marry Henrik Bjurhed but leaves the country alone after the arrival of her mothers twin sister Beatrice.

* Gunilla Magnusson - Rebecca Dahlén Lundström (1992-1994, 2000-2002)The youngest daughter of Reidar and Ellinor, Rebecca is used to have what she want and engages the photographer Ola Simonsson. She is asking her father to hires Ola as commercial chief at Dahléns, but Ola runs away after placing the bomb on the new boat where the whole Dahlén family was catched. Ola returned, and Rebecca started a new affair with him. Finally, they leaved, but Ola was arrested at the airport and charged with arson. Rebecca traveled herself, returned in 1994 with her baby Ragnar (Ola was the father) and then run-away again. She returned for the last time after Reidars death and stayed to the series ending.
