- Astronaut Group 5
NASA 's Astronaut Group 5 (the 'Original 19') selected byNASA in April1966 . Of the Lunar Module Pilots that walked on the Moon, half came from Group 5. The group as a whole is roughly split between the half who flew to the Moon and the other half who flewSkylab and Shuttle, providing the core of Shuttle Commanders early in that program. (Only one member who flew during Apollo accomplished any subsequent space missions.) This group is also distinctive in being the only time whenNASA hired a person into the JSC astronaut corps who had already earned astronaut wings,X-15 pilotJoe Engle .*
Vance D. Brand :ASTP,STS-5 ,STS-41-B ,STS-35 :CMP, first joint U.S./U.S.S.R mission; Commander, first operationalSpace Shuttle flight
*John S. Bull :Trained as Lunar Module Pilot. Resigned from the astronaut corps after learning that he was suffering frompulmonary disease .

*Joseph H. Engle:ALT,STS-2 andSTS-51-I . :As the backup Lunar Module Pilot forApollo 14 , he was expected to be selected as the LMP forApollo 17 , but was replaced by geologistHarrison Schmitt afterApollo 18 had been cancelled. Engle was the only shuttle pilot who had prior hypersonic flight experience, having earned his astronaut wings flying theX-15 rocket plane.

*Jack R. Lousma:Skylab 3 andSTS-3 :Early he trained as Lunar Module Pilot for the cancelledApollo 20 . Later he was selected as Command Module Pilot for Skylab 3.
*T. Kenneth Mattingly, II:Apollo 16 ,STS-4 ,STS-51-C :Command Module Pilot, fifth manned lunar landing. Flew onApollo 16 . Was the original Command Module Pilot forApollo 13 , but was grounded due to exposure torubella , in which was not immune to. Also flew on thespace shuttle twice as commander.
*Bruce McCandless II :STS-41-B ,STS-35 :First untethered EVA. Also flew onHubble Space Telescope deployment flight.
*Edgar D. Mitchell:Apollo 14 :Lunar Module Pilot, third manned lunar landing. Sixth man to walk on the moon.
