civil parish situated in theMetropolitan Borough of Rotherham ,South Yorkshire ,England , on the south side of theDearne Valley , betweenBarnsley andRotherham . According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 3,658. Brampton was within the historic county boundaries of theWest Riding of Yorkshire .Employment in the village was primarily related to the coal industry; the economy and residents suffered after the sudden closure of mines in the 1980s, which was, in part, sparked by the announcement of the closure of Cortonwood Colliery in the village. The hardship caused by this has left a significant amount of bad feeling in the locality, which, although waning over time, has still not gone away. Despite some recovery, Brampton was, at one point, declared one of the poorest areas in the
European Union (prior to the 2004 expansion).Recently, the economy of the area has improved, as much investment has been put into infrastructure and developing light industry and service industries in the area.
