suburb ofStoke-on-Trent , located to the south-west of the city centre and to the south of the neighbouring town ofNewcastle-under-Lyme . Although the majority of Trentham is within the city limits, it is mostly separated from the main urban area by surrounding open space and theTrent and Mersey Canal , giving it the feel of a distinct town in its own right. Trentham was the estate village forTrentham Hall , the former country house of the Dukes of Sutherland, and theirmausoleum is a landmark next to theA34 road through the suburb. The ducal estate has been re-branded asTrentham Awakes , one of the region's major leisure and tourist attractions.Trentham is not one of the historic "six towns" which comprise the city of Stoke-on-Trent, having joined the federation in the 1922 expansion of the city rather than being part of the initial 1910 grouping. This combination of history and geography, together with the area's significantly different demographics to the rest of the city, is often reflected in a tendency by Trentham residents to consider themselves separate to Stoke-on-Trent rather than a part of it. During the Second World War, Trentham Hall, within the Gardens, was used as a clearing house by the
Bank of England . Some parts of Trentham fall within the boundary of Stafford Borough Council, notably the parish Church and remaining buildings from the Trentham Hall estate, which are within the Stafford parish of Swynnerton and are classed as aconservation area . TheRiver Trent maps the border between the City of Stoke on Trent and Stafford Borough through most of its flow through Trentham.Trentham has two Anglican Churches, three Public Houses, a rugby club, two
Primary Schools (Priory and Ash Green) and aHigh School (Trentham High). The area is one of the most affluent in the city and is the home of several local celebrities such asJohn Rudge andLou Macari .The village is served by
Wedgwood railway station on theStafford to Manchester Line .References
