Edith Vanderbilt (
17 January 1873 –21 December 1958 ), nee Edith Stuyvesant Dresser, and later Edith Gerry, was a descendant ofPeter Stuyvesant , the first governor of Dutch colonial New York, and also the great-niece ofHamilton Fish . She was orphaned at age ten and was raised by her maternal grandmother.Edith’s first husband was
George Washington Vanderbilt II (1862 - 1914), the owner of theBiltmore Estate inAsheville, North Carolina . They were married on1 June 1898 inParis . After his death in 1914, Edith sold the land around the Biltmore Estate to theUnited States Forest Service . This became part of thePisgah National Forest . Edith and George had one daughter,Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt (1900 - 1976).Edith's second husband, whom she married on
22 October 1925 inLondon , wasPeter G. Gerry ,United States Senator fromRhode Island .ee also
