Eric J. Perrodin

Eric J. Perrodin

Eric J. Perrodin (born February 26, 1959) currently serves as Mayor of Compton, California.

Biography

Perrodin grew up in Compton, California. Soon after graduation from California State University, Dominguez Hills, he began working for the Compton Police Department. While serving as a police officer, he pursued a law degree at Loyola Law School. After 12 years with the department, Perrodin left to become a Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County.

In 2001, Perrodin narrowly defeated controversial mayor, Omar Bradley in his re-election bid. He won by only 281 votes in an election in which the incumbent was accused of corruption and nepotism.

During Perrodin's 2005 re-election bid, he won decisively, but was also accused of nepotism because he appointed his brother, Percy to run Compton's parking and code enforcement as a consultant. The previous year, Perrodin was fined $11,000 by the state Fair Political Practices Commission for failing to report that amount in contributions from Death Row Records in a timely manner during the 2001 mayoral race.

In 2007, the State Bar of California announced it was investigating Perrodin for allegedly threatening a local newspaper publisher over an article it published. Perrodin, it was claimed, told staff members he would cancel a contract with the newspaper and "play the race card" to inflict economic harm against the newspaper and its publisher, who was white.
