University of Waterloo School of Architecture

The School of Architecture is one of the professional schools of the University of Waterloo. It is part of the Faculty of Engineering and is located on a satellite campus in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Some of Canada's most prominent architects are graduates of the school.

The school moved to a former factory building in downtown Cambridge in September 2004, citing a lack of space at the university's main campus as a main reason for moving. [http://www.bulletin.uwaterloo.ca/2004/jul/13tu.html] Another goal was to spur economic activity in Cambridge. [http://newsrelease.uwaterloo.ca/news.php?id=2642] The move has been criticized for isolating architecture students from the rest of the university. Although the school now maintains an in-house store, some students had trouble obtaining supplies soon after the move. [http://imprint.uwaterloo.ca/story.php?f=2&t=8049&i=&v=f&story=8049] .

Academic Programs

Rome Program

The Rome Program is offered to all undergraduate students in the fall term of fourth year. The studio is located in the former Canadian Prix de Rome apartment on the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. The main focus of the studio is to offer students a different perspective of design methods as opposed to those offered in Waterloo. From the foundation of the Rome Program, Waterloo has played an architectural role in the Italian capital, involving Italian academics and practitioners, creating links with Italian and foreign institutions, and widely exhibiting and publishing the work of faculty and students.
