April 4 1952 ), also known as Jim Shannon, and derogatorily as "Lumpy" (a character from the 1950s US television program "Leave it to Beaver"), by Boston radio talk-show host Howie Carr, is a Democraticpolitician fromMassachusetts . He was defeated by a very narrow margin in the Democratic primary byLieutenant Governor John F. Kerry , who went on to win the seat. Attorney General of Massachusetts , serving from 1987 to 1991. He was defeated for re-election in 1990 byScott Harshbarger in the Democratic primary.
