- Hoxton Park Airport
is a
general aviation aerodrome in south-westernSydney ,New South Wales ,Australia .The
aerodrome is non-towered, and so operates according toCommon Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) procedures.Traffic is light; several flight training schools operate from this aerodrome, which borders on a large flight training area, serving Sydney's general aviation community. A commercial skydiving operation is also based at the aerodrome. A self-service AVGAS bowser is available.
History
The aerodrome was constructed as part of a group of airfields to be used as aircraft dispersal fields in the event of Japanese air attack on the Sydney area. Aircraft revetment hideouts were constructed within adjacent vegetation to hide and disperse aircraft. The aerodrome was used as an emergency and training field and satellite field for Schofields, Bankstown and Camden during
World War II by theRoyal Australian Air Force . [http://www.aussieheritage.com.au/listings/nsw/Cecil%20Park/HoxtonParkAirport/4860]The original airstrip was 5000ft (1524m) long and 172ft (52m) wide. The runway has been shortened since World War II and the former runway extension is noticeable at the northern end of the runway. Several aircraft revetments that existed in the farmland to the west of the aerodrome may have been removed (possibly destroyed during the construction of the M7 motorway).
The development of Western Sydney has finally caught up with the aerodrome and it is due to close permanently on 15th December 2008. The [http://pilot.net.au/hoxtonpark Hoxton Park Airport Final Fly-In] will be held just prior to the closure. This will be the last chance for people to see Hoxton Park in its glory.
