American Himalayan Foundation

American Himalayan Foundation

The American Himalayan Foundation (AHF) is a US non-profit organization that helps improve the ecology and living conditions in the Himalayas (populated by Nepalese, Sherpas, and Tibetans).

It was founded by Richard C. Blum. The late Edmund Hillary was Honorary President of the Foundation.

Overview

The American Himalayan Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the people and ecology of the Himalaya.

The Himalaya is a place where the magnificence of the world’s highest mountains is mirrored in the rugged beauty and unique culture of the people who live there. In these remote regions people often live without basic health care and education. Economic pressures have forced environmental degradation and traditional ways of life are in danger of disappearing.

The American Himalayan Foundation was founded twenty-six years ago to respond to some of these pressing problems. The Foundation builds schools, plants trees, trains doctors, funds hospitals, takes care of children and elderly, and restores sacred sites throughout the Himalayas. It also assists and encourages Tibetans to rebuild and maintain their culture both in exile, and within Tibet.

AHF supports projects that are on a human scale and that directly benefit people. In every case, AHF projects involve local commitment and community participation.

Projects

In 2001, the organization was involved with the restoration of 15th century Tibetan monasteries in the Kingdom of Mustang. [ [http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/transcripts/3006_tibet.html NOVA | Transcripts | Lost Treasures of Tibet | PBS ] ]
