ntupdate = April 12, 2008Philippe Léonard (born
February 14 ,1974 ) is a Belgian football left fullback. He is one of the three musketeers (himself,Régis Genaux andMichaël Goossens ) fromStandard Liège , from whom much was expected but failed to deliver, especially in the national team.Roberto Bisconti also belongs to this promising generation.Léonard started his professional career at Standard. He won the
Belgian Cup in 1993, when he was only 19. He scored in the final (Standard 2 -Sporting Charleroi 0). In 1992/93 and 1994/95 he was vice-champion with Standard, (each time Anderlecht was the champion). Later he moved toFrance where he played forAS Monaco for a while andOGC Nice . While playing for Monaco he scored in the semi-final of the Champions League in 1998 againstJuventus . He is still the last Belgian footballer to play in the semi-final of this competition. He won theLigue 1 two times with Monaco. When he returned to Standard, they finished second in theJupiler League (again Anderlecht won the league)."Léo" played 26 times with Belgium (37 selections) and was in the team for the Euro 2000. He was a fixed value of the national team in 1995 and 1996, as right back Genaux, but Belgium failed to qualify for EURO 1996. They both lost their place with the arrival of coach
Georges Leekens . A big disenchantment was his non-selection for the World Cup 1998 at the last moment. After EURO 2000 until 2005 he was not selected, because of a conflict with the coachRobert Waseige , so he missed the World Cup in 2002.Honours
