Ferdinand David (January 20, 1810 in
Hamburg – July 19, 1873 inKlosters ) was a Germanvirtuoso violin ist andcomposer .David was a pupil of
Louis Spohr andMoritz Hauptmann from 1823 to 1824 and in 1826 became a violinist at Königstädtischen Theater inBerlin . In 1829 he was the first violinist of a string quartet in Dorpat and undertook concert tours inRiga ,Saint Petersburg andMoscow . In 1835 he became concert master ("Konzertmeister") at the Gewandhaus inLeipzig and in 1843 professor of violin ("Violinlehrer") at the Leipziger Konservatorium. He gave the premiere ofFelix Mendelssohn 's great violin concerto, and had worked closely with Mendelssohn during the piece's preparation, giving technical advice.David's own compositions number about 40. They include two symphonies, five
violin concerto s, anopera ("Hans Wacht", 1852), astring sextet for three violins, viola and two cellos, and a number oflied er. David also composed a concertino for trombone and bassoon.David also worked as editor of violin works by, for instance,
Francesco Maria Veracini ,Pietro Locatelli andJohann Gottlieb Goldberg . He was editor of the completeBeethoven piano trio s for C.F. Peters. He was also editor of the set ofJohann Sebastian Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin in 1843David was also the author of several
musical hoax es, notably the "Chaconne in g-minor byTommaso Antonio Vitali ".David was raised Jewish but later converted to Christianity.
