Mangere Bridgesuburb and part ofMangere .The area has a long history of habitation, due to its fertile lands, a productive
harbour , and proximity to the Manukau-Tamakiisthmus .Māori ofNgāti Whātua were the inhabitants until they were supplanted by Europeanfarmers in the 19th century. The development ofmarket garden ing brought more people into the area and the land remained used in this way until the 1960s when housing developments were created to service Auckland's growing population and industry in nearbyOnehunga andOtahuhu .The area is one is of relative poverty and until 2005 had one of New Zealand's largest
trailer park s. It hosts the Mangere campus ofTe Wananga o Aotearoa , the national distribution headquarters ofsupermarket chain Progressive Enterprises as well as largegreenhouse s intomato productionFavona is under the local governance of the Manukau City Council.
According to the 2001 census, Favona has a population of 5934.
