Verheyen was part of the Belgium national team for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, as well as
Euro 2000 . His career with Belgium was dulled when he was sent off at 2-0 for Belgium against Mexico in the 1998 edition, his foul causing a penalty as the match would eventually end 2-2. In spite of this event he kept his place in the basic team until he retired after the 2002 World Cup.References
