The airline was originally formed as New Hebrides Airways and changed its name in
1981 to Air Vanuatu, after independence from the UK andFrance in1980 . It has been fully owned by the Government of Vanuatu since December1987 .Vanair was acquired by Air Vanuatu in September2004 . At one point, the airline usedBoeing 727 jets.Air Vanuatu has just celebrated 20 years of serving Vanuatu (December 2007). Air Vanuatu now operates a Boeing 737-800 aircraft on its International routes.
