Fladbury

Fladbury

Fladbury is a village located in rural Worcestershire, England. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book, meaning that the community is over 1000 years old. Today it is a thriving traditional English village sited on the banks of the River Avon, with many interesting and original buildings and features. Cropthorne village is on the opposite bank of the Avon. The two ancient communities are linked by the Jubilee Bridge.

Notable buildings

Fladbury Mill was owned by the Crabtree Family and has been restored by its current owners, Mr and Mrs Wynn. It houses a mini hydro power system based on a water turbine and water wheel, as well as a well equipped workshop.

The village (C.E. aided) school has had three excellent OFSTED reports in a row, there's a thriving preschool and very active Brownies and Guides packs, with a scout pack in the neighbouring village of Charlton.

In common with much rural Anglicanism, the village church suffers from dwindling numbers and an ageing congregation (many modern worshippers travel to Pershore or Evesham) but the building is very well preserved. Rev Sue Oliver is the curate and the post of Rector is currently vacant as [http://www.familymediator.org.uk/page002.html Rev Nicholas Von Benzon] moved on in summer 2007.

There are two pubs in the village, the Anchor Inn, and the Chequers Inn. Both pubs have restaurants, and the Chequers also offers accommodation.

Fladbury Walkabout and Festival

Fladbury Walkabout and Festival, run over a weekend in mid-July (12/13 July in 2008), centres around villagers opening their gardens, but includes a very impressive Flower Festival, boat trips, children's events, stalls, vintage cars, a brass band, a Music Festival in the church on the Saturday evening and a Fun Run on the Sunday afternoon. Proceeds from this charitable event support upkeep of the church and local good causes.

John Singer Sargent

The American artist, John Singer Sargent, visited Fladbury in 1889. His painting, [http://jssgallery.org/Paintings/10109.html 'Two Girls with Parasols at Fladbury'] , is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
