July 31 ,1935 ) is an American Republican Partypolitician , who has served in theNew Jersey General Assembly since 1998, where he represents the 13th legislative district.Biography

He was a delegate to the
Republican National Convention in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000. Thompson served theNew Jersey Turnpike Authority from 1994-1997 as director of communications and formerly as director of planning, analysis and government relations. He was employed by theNew Jersey Department of Health from 1972-1994 as a chemist and director of clinical laboratory improvement service. He was appointed by thenGovernor of New Jersey Christine Todd Whitman to serve on the Governor's Education Task Force in 1994 as Co-Chair. He served on the United States Armed Forces Epidemiological Board from 1983-1990.Thompson received a B.S. in 1960 from the
University of Arkansas in Chemistry and Mathematics and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1965 fromLouisiana State University in Physical Chemistry. Same-Sex Marriage - Assemblyman Thompson was one of 19 Assembly members who voted against New Jersey's Civil Unions Bill in December 2006. He clarified his views in an email to constituents and those who contacted him as follows "I voted no believing marriage should be between one man and one woman. Had the opportunity arisen to vote for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman, I would have voted yes for the amendment."Fact|date=February 2007
