- Andrea Giganti
Andrea Giganti (1731 – 1787) was a Sicilian
architect of theSicilian Baroque era. He was born inTrapani in 1731; in his youth he studied architecture underGiovanni Biagio Amicon (1684-1754). Around 1751 Giganti came under the patronage ofGiuseppe Stella ,Bishop of Mazara del Vallo , with whom he went toPalermo where he studied for thepriest hood and wasordain ed.After ordination he entered the household of the Sicilian
aristocrat the Prince ofScordia , where he seems to have been employed as bothconfessor and private architect, working on the various houses owned by the Scordia family.Other Sicilian buildings in the baroque style designed by Giganti include Villa Galetti at
Bagheria , Villa Ventimiglia, atMezzo-Monreale , the church of S. Paolo dei Giardinieri, and thedais andhigh altar at the church of San Salvitore in Palermo.A trained
engineer , Giganti was also responsible for a number ofbridge s. Towards the end of his life he began to forsake the baroque style in favour of a more simple neoclassical style.
