- Cathedral school
The first cathedral schools originated in the
Early Middle Ages . They were run by thecathedral clergy and typically had fewer than 100 students. At first they generally functioned as seminaries to train future priests, but later acceptedlay students. Often they would also teach members of the cathedralchoir . During theHigh Middle Ages , in the context of theRenaissance of the 12th century , some of these schools developed into autonomousmedieval Universities , while others remained under the control of thebishop or his chancellor.
