- Mellorine
-
Mellorine is a lower cost alternative to ice cream, wherein other fats are used instead of butterfat. It can be made from both animal fat and vegetable fat.
Mellorine became popular in the United States starting in the early 1950s. From 1953 to 1957, an average of 31.095 million US gallons (117,710 m3) was produced each year, increasing to 39.571 million US gallons (149,790 m3) in 1958. [1]
Mellorine is produced by freezing, while stirring a pasteurized mix of milk-derived nonfat solids and animal or vegetable fat (or both). Afterward, it is sweetened with a carbohydrate sweetener and the addition of flavouring ingredients.
There is also a pun regarding this in the manga and anime series One Piece - Sanji will refer to female characters he likes (for example, Nami and Robin) as Mellorine.
