May 18 ,1949 ) is a football manager for Gent and a former player.He used to coach the
Belgium national football team and led it to the1998 FIFA World Cup finals after a two-legged win against the Republic of Ireland in the qualifying playoff. Leekens was selected as national coach after an impressive work atR.E. Mouscron that was playing the title in their first year inJupiler League at the half of the season. He was sacked from his role as federal coach after a disappointing 3rd place in the World Cup group stage.Georges Leekens is the cousin of Louis Leekens. Louis Leekens was Belgian National Champion of gymnastics in 1966 and is currently leading the top sports school for gymnastics in Genk.
