Marymount School of New York is a college preparatory, independent, Catholic day school for girls, founded by Mother Joseph Butler in 1926 as part of a network of schools directed by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. The School enrolls students in classes Nursery through XII. The curriculum fosters the intellectual, aesthetic, physical, and spiritual development of students and incorporates technology as an essential tool for learning. Marymount's mission statement reads in part,

"The religious traditions of the School provide a foundation for articulating and exploring questions of personal integrity, ethical decision-making, and social justice. While committed to its Catholic heritage, Marymount School respects the religious diversity of the community and seeks to give all students a deeper understanding of the role of the spiritual in life, an appreciation of individual religious traditions, and a commitment to service."

Marymount is considered a prestigious school for girls in the United States, with 100% of each graduating class accepted to four-year universities in the U.S. and abroad.

History

Marymount School was founded in 1926 as one of a worldwide network of schools directed by the Religious † of the Sacred Heart of Mary, an international order of women established in 1849 in Béziers, France. In 1903, Mother Joseph Butler, RSHM, was assigned to the United States. Mother Butler purchased the Florence Vanderbilt estate at 1028 Fifth Avenue in 1926 and founded Marymount School of New York.

In 1936 the adjoining Pratt mansion at 1027 Fifth Avenue was acquired, and in 1950, the School purchased the Dunlevy Milbank property at 1026. The three turn-of-the-century Beaux-Arts buildings occupy approximately half the block between 83rd and 84th Streets on Fifth Avenue.

In the past two decades, the School has experienced extensive expansion in size and in program. A gymnasium was built on the roof of the three buildings in 1984, and in 1994, three state-of-the-art science labs were created on the top floors of two of the buildings. In August 1999, Marymount purchased a townhouse at 2 East 82nd Street to serve as the home of the Middle School. The new site opened in 2002 and currently houses Classes IV through VII. Sixteen other Marymount schools exist in the United States, Mexico, Colombia and elsewhere.

Academics

Marymount's Upper School (Classes VIII-XII) offers a curriculum of required courses and electives. The curriculum allows students of all learning styles to explore a variety of subject areas and to study in depth those which particularly interest them. Honors courses are offered in all major academic disciplines. Technological tools are integrated into the curriculum at all levels and in all disciplines. Field trips drawing upon the vast resources of New York City and classes regularly held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (directly across Fifth Avenue) enrich the program.

Marymount's Middle School (Classes IV-VII) offers girls opportunities for independence, leadership, and achievement. High-quality work is expected and celebrated in all areas, whether a student is conducting a science experiment, performing in a play, or completing a research project. The integrated core curriculum gradually increases in the degree of departmentalization at each grade level. Marymount has a commitment to diversity. Fostering women to explore their boundaries amongst one another. The school embraces, and at times encourages, when this leads to alternate life style choices. The small class size enables students to exchange ideas in discussion, to receive immediate responses and guidance from their teachers and classmates, and to really connect with each other in all ways. Interactive classes and extensive experience outside the classroom promote the qualities and habits of leadership.

Marymount's Lower School (Classes N-III) builds a solid foundation of cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills within a carefully structured and child-centered environment. Children are invited to discover and explore the world through observation, role-playing, and hands-on activities. Teachers emphasize critical-thinking skills and diverse approaches to problem-solving. All children are challenged in small skill-level groupings.

Membership and Accreditation

Marymount is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools. The School holds memberships in the National Association of Independent Schools, the Educational Records Bureau, the Independent School Admissions Association of Greater New York, the National Catholic Educational Association, and the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools.
