David Joseph Campbell

David Campbell (born 6 August 1973 in South Australia) is an Australian singer and stage performer. He has performed and recorded many different genres of music from rock to classics. He is the son of Jimmy Barnes. He is engaged to British actress Lisa Hewitt, and it has been reported they will marry in late 2008.

Early career

Campbell first won roles in major performances in the early to mid 1990s at the Stables theatre in Sydney. He then received a nomination for a MO Award for Best Musical Theatre Performer for his role in the revival of Alex Hardings' "Only Heaven Knows". He has also performed in cabaret in New York, and appeared in the Cameron Mackintosh tribute show "Hey Mr. Producer" in London.

Campbell took the major starring role in the musical "Shout!", the story of 'The Wild One' Australian rocker Johnny O'Keefe. He has also had starring roles in productions of "Les Misérables " (as Marius), "Saturday Night", "Babes in Arms", "" and "Sunset Boulevard". For the latter, he won the 2006 Helpmann Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

in 2000 he did the singing voice for the character Joseph in Dreamworks' animated film "".

Recent recording career

In 2006, Campbell released "The Swing Sessions", an album covering 13 classic swing tracks such as "Mack the Knife", "Call Me Irresponsible", "Mr Bojangles", and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You". The album was produced by Chong Lim. He has also announced during a television appearance that another Swing Sessions album is being worked on, due for release 3 November 2007, also produced by Lim.

Campbell won the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Performance in an Australian Contemporary Concert for his Wild With Style shows.

Television career

In 2007 Campbell appeared on the celebrity singing competition "It Takes Two" as a professional performer. His celebrity partner was Jolene Anderson, an actress on Australian drama "All Saints". They covered styles such as pop, rock, motown/soul, number one hits, disco and 80s. The pair received several scores of 10 and received perfect 10s from all four judges on one occasion. Anderson and Campbell won on 10 July 2007.

Campbell's father is Australian singer Jimmy Barnes, but he was raised by his grandmother, often talking fondly of her and attributing his love of swing music to her influence (this he often refers to during his live concerts). Campbell performed with his father on an episode of "Dancing With The Stars". He also competed in the third season of the show, where he was partnered with current World Salsa Champion Luda Kroitor. They finished in fifth position.
