Arsakeio

Arsakeio

Arsakeio (Αρσάκειο) is the name of a group of co-educational independent schools in Greece. They are administrated by Filekpedeftiki Etaireia (Φιλεκπαιδευτική Εταιρεία). The Arsakeio comprises of five schools, which are located at Psychiko, Ekali (Tositseio), Thessaloniki, Patras, and recently Tirana, Albania and have more than 3000 students each.

Filekpedeftiki Etaireia can be dated back to 1836 when Ioannis Kokkonis, Georgios Gennadios and Misail Apostolidis created school where young girls could be educated after the difficult years of the war. Initially it was located in the centre of Athens, in the place of Stoa tou Bibliou, and was functioning as a boarding school only for female students. Its ultimate aim was to train young teachers and send them (before 1913) to Macedonia, which at that time belonged to Bulgaria, in order to help the survival of Greek language and culture not to be forgotten by Macedonian children.

The school remained to be addressed only to girls until about 1985.

The school located in Tirana was opened 8 years ago and has about 400 students.A new and bigger school is being built in Tirana which has got dormitories where students from other cities can stay.
