Name
In 1952, an Engineering College was setup as a "constituent" college of the
University of Peshawar with an initial enrollment of only twenty students (according to the [http://www.nwfpuet.edu.pk/events/AR2006-07.pdf UET Peshawar Annual Report 2006 - 2007] ). This college was granted the charter to operate as an independent engineering university in1980 under the name NWFP University of Engineering and Technology. It is also popularly known as UET Peshawar.Location

Campus
UET Peshawar has four campuses. The main campus is in the University Campus area, off University Road, Peshawar. Recently, three satellite campuses in
Abbottabad ,Bannu andMardan have been established. ThePeshawar campus, however, remains the nucleus of the University.Abbottabad Campus
The Abbottabad campus was inaugurated in October 2002 at the premises of the old Ayub Medical College. Abbottabad campus consists of two departments, Electronics and Architecture.This campus has the honour to start Electronic Engineering for the very first time in UET history. In this respect its first Batch 2004 to 2008 which is graduating this year is called PIONEER Batch. The Department of Electronics Engineering is functioning in the main building of Abbottabad Campus which is located in the heart of city surrounded by lush green lawns and tall trees. Bannu Campus
The Bannu campus became operational in May 2002 at the premises of Comprehensive High School. Currently Bannu campus is offering engineering in only two technologies i.e. Electrical and Civil.
Mardan Campus
The Mardan campus, also inaugurated in 2002, is spread over 22 acres of area and offers degrees in Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Software Engineering.
Organization
UET Peshawar is a public university run by the provincial government. Admissions to the university depend on whether the applicants are domiciled in the North West Frontier Province. There are some quota categories that would enable students from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and other provinces under the
Federation ofPakistan to enroll.The head of UET Peshawar is designated as
Vice Chancellor , appointed by the Governor of theNorth West Frontier Province (NWFP) and mandated to run the University. The Vice Chancellor could be an academic or a non-acadeimc, could be appointed from the existing faculty and administration of the university or from some external sources including retired senior military officers. Currently, the Vice Chancellor is Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani.There are several senior staff posts that report directly to the Vice Chancellor. These include:

Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand ),Strathclyde University (UK ),McGill University (Canada ),George Washington University (USA ), University of Petronas (Malaysia ) and University of Liverpool (UK ), andUniversity of Maryland, College Park (USA ).Research
The primary purpose of UET Peshawar is to produce practising engineers to support and sustain the economic growth of Pakistan from engineering standpoint. However, there has been a growing impetus towards R&D in the recent years, specially with the increase of budgetary allocation dispersed by Federal Government for Higher Education. This has led to increased scholarships for students to foreign universities for higher education, specifically towards PhD. Such scholarships typically carry a mandatory restriction to come back and serve in the parent academic institutes to develop research nuclei in their area of expertise.

Vision Plan 2020
UET Peshawar recently submitted an ambitious plan to
Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan called the Vision Plan 2020. This plan envisages:* An increase in the student enrollment from (approximately) 3000 to 17000.
* A corresponding increase in faculty size from (approximately) 250 to 1150. This will maintain a student to teacher ratio of 1:15.
* High tech labs would be increased as well as new academic programs to be established.
* The plan also calls for upgradation of Earthquake Engineering Center to Institute of Earthquake Engineering & Engineering Seismology.
* Modern scientific and academic areas such as Biotechnology, Alternate Energy and Environmental Engineering are planned to be added.
* Enhanced spending on faculty development and establishing linkages with foreign universities.
* Total cost in year 2020 is estimated to be Rs 20.29 billion.References
