Career

Television

Hornby appeared in various television productions including the Royal Air Force National Service sitcom Get Some In!, Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999 and Minder alongside George Cole.

He first appeared in Emmerdale on 19 February 1980 in what was originally a three-month contract. He took over the role of Jack in 1980 from Andrew Burt who left the show in 1976. During his 28 years on Emmerdale, he became one of the soap's most popular characters.

Music

During the 1960s, Hornby was a drummer with The Dennisons [1].

Personal life

Hornby was married to Helen Weir who played his on-screen wife Pat Sugden. They had a son, Thomas, before divorcing in 2000.

Death

Clive Hornby died on 3 July 2008, aged 63.[1] He had taken a break from the soap to battle a then unnamed illness. It was stated by The Sun that Clive Hornby died of hypoxia, a disease often associated with cancer,[2] in a Leeds Hospice. His funeral took place on 15 July 2008 at Rawdon Crematorium in Leeds.[3]

Jack Sugden was laid to rest onscreen in an episode screened by ITV1 on 10 February 2009. Jack's dialogue from earlier episodes was used as memories for several of the characters. A vision of Jack made a graveside appearance at the end of the episode, which closed with the original version of the soap's theme.
